Wi-Fi is becoming increasingly important in live sports venues. While watching a game in a stadium or arena, more and more fans expect to be able to remain connected through their smart phones for a whole variety of reasons.

In the Center’s study of sports fan behavior and media use, 40% of all respondents (all of whom said that they follow at least one sport in season) said that having Wi-Fi in a stadium or arena was very important for them. Only 27% said that it was not important at all.

Importance was indirectly correlated with age. The younger the adult fans, the more likely they said that having W-Fi in a stadium or arena was personally very important. Sixty-one percent of those aged 18-24 said that having Wi-Fi in a live sporting venue was very important for them. This is compared to 50% for the 25-34 category, 44% for those aged 35-54, 22% of the 55-64 year olds, and only 19% for those aged 65-74.

The exact opposite was found for those who said that having Wi-Fi in a stadium or arena was not important at all for them. Only 11% of those aged 18-24 said that having Wi-Fi in a live sporting venue was not important at all for them. This is compared to 18% for the 25-34 category, 22% for those aged 35-54, 43% of the 55-64 year olds, and 52% for those aged 65-74.
