Web Insight: why do you visit social media sites?

In little more than a decade, social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have become an focal point for personal communication. Why do people visit them?

We asked this question of those who visit social networking sites in our Digital Future Survey in 2018.

The most popular answer was to relax and fill time, given by 67% of respondents.

The second most commonly given response (57%) was to find out about relevant events and information.

Fifty-four present of respondents said that they visited the sites for conversation and social interaction.

This was followed by for gaining insight into the circumstances of others (32 percent), for escape (31 percent), and for cultural and aesthetic enjoyment (28 percent).
