Can social media impact fans relationships with their teams, and, if so, how much?
In the Center’s study of sports fans and media use, we surveyed people who follow at least one sport in season. Of that group, 12% said that social media impacted their relationship with their team(s) “a lot,” 36% said “somewhat,” and 52% replied “not at all.”
The major factor associated with different answers to this question was age. The younger the fans, the more likely they said that social media had an effect.
Of those under age 18, 25% said that social media impacted their relationship a lot. This compares with 19% for the 18-24 year old category, 18% for those aged 25-34, 11% for the 35-54 year old set, 6% for the 55 to 64 year olds, and only 1% for those aged 65-74.
