Web Insight: how often do you download or watch videos online?

Millions of people watch videos online, on such sites as YouTube, Vimeo, Metacafe, and Veoh. How has the popularity of this activity changed over time?

In 2007, as part of our Digital Future Survey, we asked how frequently internet users downloaded or watched videos online. We have asked this question every time we have collected data since then.

Looking at those who partake of this activity frequently we see that only 3% of users engaged with online video several times a day in 2007. This had more than tripled to 10% in 2014. In 2018, 16% of users downloaded or watched videos several times a day.

Looking at the figures for daily use reveals a similar picture. In 2007, 7% of users said they watched or downloaded videos daily. In 2013 this had doubled to 14%. In 2018, 24% said that they engaged daily with online videos.

The percentage of internet users occupying themselves with video online has increased rapidly. We will be tracking this activity to see whether this upward trajectory continues.
