Do Americans connect to the internet while driving? If so, how is it done? Does this behavior vary by age?

More than half of respondents in our Future of Transportation Study said they connect to the internet while driving.

Forty-nine percent connect to the Internet through a smart phone or tablet. Nine percent do so through their car’s built-in internet connection or a wifi hotspot. And 45% said they do not connect to the internet while they are driving. (Note that some people connect both through smart phone or tablet and built-in internet connection or a wifi hotspot.)

Internet connection habits while driving do vary by age. Of Millennials (ages 19-35), 66% connect through a smart phone or tablet, 13% link to the net through built-in internet connection or a wifi hotspot, and only 27% do not connect at all to the internet while driving.

Of post-Millennials (ages 14-18), 55% use a smart phone or tablet to connect to the internet, 18% use built-in internet connection or a wifi hotspot, and 38% do not connect at all.

For non-Millennials (ages 36 and above), a majority (54%) do not go online while driving, while 41% connect through a smart phone or tablet, and 6% make the connection using built-in internet connection or a wifi hotspot.
