Web Insight:
How reliable is information posted by individuals?

Individuals are free to post virtually limitless amounts and types of information online. But do viewers and readers put any real stock into any of what they see and read that is posted by individuals?

In the Center’s Digital Future Survey in 2018, we asked internet users how much of the information posted by individuals (on blogs, photologs, personal websites, etc.) was accurate and reliable.

Only 1% of respondents said all of it and 12% said most of it. Thirty six percent said about half of it. The most common response (45%) was small portion of it. Six percent said none of it.

So while the average person can post virtually anything he or she wants online, many viewers and readers are quire skeptical about the reliability and accuracy of what they see.
