Throughout the past three years we have always been aware that the real strength of the monitoring process has been the contribution of the outstanding UCLA students who work on the project. It is their efforts, ideas and commitment that continue to make this project dynamic and satisfying. Their contribution is appreciated far more than we can ever adequately express. We are particularly thankful for the new perspective and fresh ideas that Steve Callaghan brought to this year's report.
Six outside readers carefully examined drafts of the report and contributed invaluable suggestions that greatly enhanced the quality of this work.. Our readers were: Alan Arkatov, chairman, The Home Education Network (THEN); Shale Horowitz, professor, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Harlan Lebo, director of communications, College of Letters & Sciences, UCLA; Ralph Richardson, Professor Emeritus, UCLA, and former president, Los Angeles City Board of Education; George Vradenburg III, general counsel, America Online; and the Honorable Kim Wardlaw, U.S. District Court Judge.
At UCLA we thank Gayle Byock, Jeffrey Hirsch, Deborah Kallick, Kumar
Patel, Kim Savage, Scott Waugh and Stuart Wolpert for their friendship, commitment to the
Center and always valuable counsel.
