We are deeply indebted to the continuing commitment of our monitoring staff who work long hours watching all of the television discussed in this report. Without their dedication and extraordinary level of ability, this project would not be possible.
Four outside readers carefully examined drafts of this report and made invaluable suggestions that greatly enhanced this report. Our readers were: Shale Horowitz, professor, Central European University; Ralph Richardson, Professor Emeritus, UCLA, and former president, Los Angeles City Board of Education; George Vradenburg III, partner, Latham & Watkins; and the Honorable Kim Wardlaw, U.S. District Court Judge.
At UCLA we thank Gayle Byock, Deborah Kallick, Archie Kleingartner, John Kobara, Harlan Lebo, Kim Savage and Scott Waugh for their friendship, commitment to the Center and always valuable counsel.
Lastly we acknowledge two friends who are retiring. Senator Paul Simon, who led the effort that resulted in this project, has been a true leader in the effort to deal with the television violence issue. These pages indicate that his approach to the problem has been successful. After close to 30 years at the helm, UCLA's Chancellor Charles Young is also retiring. Not only has Chancellor Young been a friend and advisor, but, during his unprecedented term of office, UCLA has risen into the ranks of America's finest research universities. We wish both Senator Simon and Chancellor Young well and hope that in their retirement they will continue to be involved with our Center and its activities.
