Web Insight: how does political orientation affect views about government regulation of the internet?

The internet has been front and center is recent controversies involving fake news, privacy, hate speech, political bias, and other issues. In this context, are people in favor of the government increasing its regulation of the internet?

In our Digital Future Survey all respondents aged 16 and above were asked if the government should regulate the internet more than it does now. Support for increased regulation was rather tepid all across the political spectrum.

In 2018, only 23 percent of liberals, and 21 percent of both conservatives and those in the middle-of-the-road somewhat or strongly agreed that the government should regulate the internet more than it does now.
