For those who believe that GPS navigation is an important technology for cars to have, what sort of GPS device do they use?

The Center’s Future of Transportation Study found that 11 percent of people who believe that GPS navigation is important for cars do not currently use GPS technology in their car. Sixteen percent have GPS technology built into their car. Twenty present have a dedicated GPS device like a Garmin. And 51% use the GPS technology available on their phone while in their car.

A key factor in determining which type of GPS device is used among those for whom GPS navigation is an important technology for cars to have is age. Sixty-eight percent of those in the 25-34 year old age group access GPS technology in their car through their phone, while only 9% of this age group has a dedicated device. For those aged 18-24, the related figures are 61% and 10%.

On the other end of the age spectrum, only twenty-nine percent of those in the 65 and over age category access GPS technology in their car through their phone, while 33% of this age group has a dedicated device. For those aged 55-64, the corresponding figures are 44% and 29%.

Whereas the young are more likely to access GPS navigation technology through their phones, older folks are more likely to have a dedicated device like a Garmin.
