At what age is it appropriate for a person to have a Facebook account? Facebook requires everyone to be at least 13 years old before they can create an account. In the Center’s Digital Future Study, we have asked our respondents about this issue since 2012.

Users’ answers have been quite consistent: in 2012, the average answer given by internet users was 14.7. In 2018, the figure was 14.8. In 2013, 2015, and 2016, the average age was 14.5. In 2014 it was 14.6.

However, in answering this question, non-users have given more varied responses over the years. The lowest average response (13.0) was given in 2012, matching Facebook’s requirements. The highest average (16.1) was offered in 2016. In 2013, 2014, and 2015 the averages given by non-users were 15.8, 15.4, and 14.9 respectively.

In 2018, non-users provided the average age of 14.8 as appropriate for opening a Facebook account.
